Myopia Management

Myopia, commonly known as nearsightedness, is a vision condition where distant objects appear blurry while close-up vision remains clear. This occurs when the eye grows too long or the cornea is too curved, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it. Myopia typically develops in childhood and can progress over time, especially during school-age years. Genetics play a significant role, so if one or both parents are nearsighted, their children have a higher likelihood of developing myopia. Symptoms often include squinting, difficulty seeing road signs, and eye strain, particularly after prolonged screen time or reading.

With the rise in digital device use and more time spent indoors, myopia has become increasingly common. If left uncorrected, it can impact daily activities such as driving and sports, and in higher degrees, it may increase the risk of eye health issues like retinal detachment, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. Fortunately, myopia can be managed with prescription glasses, contact lenses, or advanced treatments like orthokeratology (Ortho-K) and myopia control therapies to slow its progression.
